Not homesick but...

I just want to talk to my parents!! I haven't spoken to them for more than 2 weeks now, since I left Alajuela and came to La Fortuna, and I do believe that's the longest amount of time that's ever passed when I haven't spoken to them, actually, physically spoken to them (since year 9, when there were no phones...) We've been trying to Skype, but somehow between our two connections it fails, so we chat instead, which is great (and impressively tech-savvy for my parentals! They remain amused by all my emoticon additions) but not the same. Tonight I tried every pay phone in La Fortuna (that I could find around the city centre) to use my phone card, which EVERY phone said I could use, but to no avail (my family's phone needs to be fixed.)

To be honest, I don't really miss home - to be sure, I miss my friends, I hate seeing their FB statuses about the fun they're having that I'm missing out on, I miss my family and being able to see my grandma while she's in Australia, and my cousins, who visited just after I left - but I haven't had that ache for home, the feeling that nothing is quite as comfortable as your own bed, nothing so secure as your own roof, that you cannot truly enjoy anything whilst being away from this place (having been to boarding school, I am all too familiar with this feeling). I am sure this feeling will come, I have no doubt I'll experience travel fatigue and long for home - probably after I leave Costa Rica and begin my high speed tour of Panama-Ecuador-Peru-England-Norway-Paris-Spain with barely time to catch my breath and enjoy the view. In the meantime, I would really kill for a piece of vegemite toast, to be perfectly honest. They serve toast here buttered, which is my second favourite way to eat toast (ok third, after buttered and covered in Milo), but as they say, nothing quite beats a first love.

In any case, I am truly loving life here, and very happy - more than happy, contented, wholly satisfied, which I think goes deeper than just happiness. But I would really like to be able to talk to my parents!

[EDIT: it turns out that, silly me, I was using the phones wrong - to be fair, you had to dial an extra number which was not explained anywhere - so I got through to my dad this morning and spoke to him for 10 wonderful minutes before my phone card ran out. Success!]

What is vegemite toast?!

Ahahahaha S! Vegemite is a spread, like jam or peanut butter :) best spread after butter, but not too much - it's salty and strong! You might be familiar with Marmite, which is a poor British imitation ;) We Aussies are notorious for our love of it, since it seems we are the only ones with the stomach for it! It's a great source of vitamin B. You need to come and try some!! :D
