A Week of Wondering: 1

Lately a lot of quotes have got me thinking, so I thought I'd post about them to see what you think. In all, there will probably be 7, hence "a week of wondering," unless, of course, I come up with more. Which is entirely likely.

1.

It is a basic truth of the human condition that everybody lies.

True? False? All the time? This begs the question: can we help it? Why do we do it? Is it necessary to survive?

Kudos to you if you can pick the tv shows, movies and/or books most of these quotes come from.

oh haha this one is tooo easy. WOOO HOUSE! Will most of the quotes be from House? There are heaps of great words in that show :D

I think it's true. I see the human condition as the fact that ultimately we are all pretty damn self interested (perhaps a hallmark from my economics subjects haha) and lying is an effective way of making life easier for ourselves, so we do it.

Yep. I knew a House-o-holic like you would get it. =) There are a few from House, I think, but more from other shows. House is not the only thing I watch. Ha ha. Almost. I want to watch the 2nd season already!!

A cynic like you would say that. ;-) I don't know if it's a basic truth of the human condition, but I do think that everybody lies.

This feels like a TOK question ;P The scars of IB?

I think everyone lies. It is a way to survive, in a way, since it makes us, in that moment, feel a little bit better by not telling the truth and perhaps gets us out of some situations we would like to run from. I asked a friend what he thought and he answered that telling the truth would be the death of modern society. Politeness, awareness of other's emotions, reactions, empathy, defence, secrecy - all would be lost.

Interesting point, no?

Definitely the scars of IB. They never go away! ;-)

That is interesting, the idea that truth would be the death of modern society. It's already the death of most careers, particularly politicians and celebrities. Does the sensationalist media promote truth as destruction then, or is it simply a result of this?
